About Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees are often mistaken for large bumble bees but they can be identified if you look closely.  The carpenter bee is black and marked with areas of yellow hair, similar to a bumble bee, EXCEPT the dorsal part of their abdomen is shiny and lacking any hair at all.

  • Carpenter bees DO NOT eat wood.  They bore long tunnels into the wood to create a "gallery."  A gallery is a tunnel or tunnels that have been divided into individual cells.  The carpenter bee inserts a ball of pollen and lays one egg on the ball of pollen (food for the soon to hatch larvae.)

  • Carpenter bees begin creating cells, divided by a mass of wood pulp, and work their way back out of the tunnel.  They will often enlarge existing galleries or use old ones and thus create a very elaborate gallery.

  • These galleries cause varying degrees of structural damage, depending in the size of the galleries.

  • Nesting sites  can be found but are not limited to siding, eaves, wooden shakes, porches, window sills, doors, fence railings or posts, and even lawn furniture.  Unpainted or weathered wood are especially susceptible to carpenter bees.

  • It's generally not difficult to locate a carpenter bee infestation.  Below the entrance holes there will be yellowish or brownish excrement stains that are quite easily seen.

  • The abandoned nests of carpenter bees often become infested by other insect pests.
